The role of tongue posture and Incisive Papilla ‘the Spot’ in Speech Clarity and Myofunctional Health.

The Importance of a toned tongue posture for clear speech: Understanding the Role of the Tongue Blade and Incisive Papilla

When we think about clear speech, we often focus on the vocal cords, pronunciation, and enunciation. However, one of the most crucial yet overlooked components of effective speech is the tongue posture for speech clairty. A toned tongue plays a significant role in articulating sounds, particularly when it comes to reaching the incisive papilla or ‘The Spot’ (the bumpy ridge right behind your top front teeth), an area that influences speech clarity.

The Anatomy of the Tongue

The tongue is a complex muscular organ that plays multiple roles in speech, eating, breathing and facial/dental development. It is divided into various sections, including the tip, blade, and body. The tongue blade—the part just behind the tip—works in coordination with other speech organs to create precise sounds.

One vital area for articulation is the incisive papilla ‘The Spot”, located just behind the upper front teeth. This small mound of tissue serves as a key landmark for speech production, especially for sounds like “t,” “d,” “n”, “l” and “s”.  Proper engagement of the tongue in relation to the incisive papilla is essential for achieving clear, intelligible speech.

The Importance of Tongue Tone

A toned tongue is crucial for effective speech. Muscle tone affects the tongue’s agility and strength, enabling it to move quickly and accurately during speech production. Here’s why a toned tongue matters:

  1. Articulation Precision: A strong, well-coordinated tongue can manipulate sounds more effectively. A toned tongue can quickly adjust to form various shapes necessary for different speech sounds.
  2. Control and Stability: Good muscle tone helps maintain control over tongue movements. This is particularly important when reaching the incisive papilla, where the tongue needs to be precise to produce clear sounds.
  3. Reduced Fatigue: A toned tongue experiences less fatigue during prolonged speaking. This allows for sustained clarity without straining the muscles involved in speech production.

The Role of the Tongue Blade in Reaching the Incisive Papilla

To achieve clear speech clarity and sounds, the tongue blade must effectively make contact with the incisive papilla. This interaction is essential for several reasons:

  • Sound Formation: Many consonant sounds are formed through precise contact between the tongue and the roof of the mouth. The ability of the tongue blade to reach the incisive papilla enables the production of crisp sounds.
  • Clarity and Intelligibility: When the tongue is able to touch the incisive papilla correctly, it enhances the clarity of speech. Vowels and consonants become more distinct, making it easier for listeners to understand the speaker.
  • Facilitating Rapid Speech: A toned tongue allows for quicker transitions between sounds. This is especially important for fluent speech, where rapid articulation is necessary.

Tongue exercises for speech clarity

To enhance tongue tone and ensure effective engagement with the incisive papilla, consider the following exercises:

  1. Surfboard tongue – Can you protrude the tongue so that ONLY the tongue is working- don’t support the tongue with your lips or teeth, and don’t let it drop down onto the lower lip or chin. Hold it long and thin and horizontal to the floor. Can you make it pointy at the tip, just like a surf board.
  2. Teeth cleaners – can you use your tongue to rub all around the front of your teeth, with your lips closed. Do this for a minute after each meal.
  3. Tongue clicks – tone the muscles in and outside of the tongue by suctioning the tongue to the roof of the mouth and allowing it to ‘CLICK’- repeat this 10-20 times, daily.
  4. Find the right ARTICULATION SPOT – ‘Myospots’ are a great way to make sure the tip of your tongue is on the right spot saying N, L, T, D, S and Z. The blade of the tongue must come up to meet that flavoured spot, not push forward onto/through teeth. With Myospots, the flavour will keep your tongue tip on that spot, even when you are not thinking about it. They are the perfect ‘tongue trainer’
